Tutorial: Quidditch World Cup

tutorial01.jpgAlright people, here is the much requested Quidditch World Cup / Pop Art Extravaganza icon tutorial. As some of you know, I have been very hesitant to offer up a tutorial on these icons, and am not entirely sure why I'm doing so now beyond the fact that I'm really bored.

This tutorial is for Photoshop 7, although I'm sure you could easily adapt it for Paint Shop Pro and all other related image editing programs. As with most things, this tutorial is only meant to be a guide. I really want to emphasize experimenting with your own versions on this tutorial, because it would be boring to make a whole new set of icons just like these, right? Right.

Just a few notes before we begin:

  1. Layers with a grey border indicate a layer where the item is situated on the layer; I used the border only so that you can see the edges in the tutorial. It's not there in the final icon.
  2. Each of the images represents a layer in the layers palette; the images at the top are the top most layers, and the layers at the bottom are the bottom most layers.
  3. Each layer is shown at 100% opacity and normal blend mode so you can actually see what I've done.
  4. The Gary Oldman image has already been tweaked to bring it up to basic iconing level, i.e. cropped, sharpened, the copied layers of screen and soft light merged with the base, etc. You need this basic level of understanding to proceed with this tutorial.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: colour #E24D47. I'm pretty sure what I did was create the stars with a font I had on hand called "Freaking Stars", rasterize the layer, erase the bits I didn't want, and then merge it all together.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: colour #0D6C84. Same method as above, or you can take the easy way out by setting the layer fill to 0% and then adding a colour overlay at 100% opacity in this colour.
tutorial01.jpg Text Layer: 18pt Gill Sans MT Condensed, colour #0D6C84, tracking 25, rotated counterclockwise about 45°.
tutorial01.jpg Image Layer: blend mode "normal". There are two gradient maps on top of this image, and both of them are set to "group with previous" on top of the Sirius Black cut out. The gradient map immediately on top of Sirius (rowr) is a black and white map, and the one on top of the black and white map is done with the colours #E24D47 and #F6B78E. For more info on gradient maps, definitely check out [info]cooldecade's tutorial.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: custom shape, colour #E24D47. There are a couple of shapes like this included in the "custom shapes" area on PS7, but this particular one may have been one I downloaded from Adobe.com ages and ages ago. I really can't remember.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: ellipse tool, colour #577981. Holding "shift" while dragging your cursor will create a perfect circle rather than an oval.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: ellipse tool, colour #F6B78E.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: ellipse tool, colour #E24D47.
tutorial01.jpg Shape Layer: line tool, colour #F6B78E. I basically made a bunch of different sized lines all over the canvas, rotated them until they looked the way I wanted, and then merged them into one layer. Definitely play around with different lengths / arrangements of lines on this layer.
tutorial01.jpg Fill Layer: colour #EE8A70.

And you're done!

ETA Obviously you can adjust the colour schemes and things accordingly to make different coloured versions, as I did here. To make my life easier, I just did colour overlays over top of everything because I was far too lazy to recreate all the shapes and stuff.

Actually, I'd be really interested in seeing what other colour schemes people come up with!

It's all Sirius, baby, cause Sirius is the definition of hottness, so any icon with his likeness on it is bound to follow! :D
